ABOUT US
ICAN-UK & District Society is one of four District Societies of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) based overseas. Established in 1988, the District currently has over 550 members in the UK. The District is overseen by an elected Executive Committee.
Our key strategic objectives are to effectively represent ICAN in the UK, improve the professional competence of our members, promote cohesion among our members and the Nigerian community, promote members' social well-being and ensure the financial viability of the District.
OUR HISTORY
ICAN UK District is one of four District Societies of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) based overseas. UK District Society was established in 1988 following motion formally moved by Mr. James Olugbenga Coker. The pioneer members were:
1. Mrs C.A.I Shittu - Chairman
2. Mr. F. Johnson – Vice Chairman
3. Mr. J. Coker – General Secretary
4. Mr. J. Ariwodola – Financial Secretary
5. Dr. F.I. Onyenemelu (Deceased) – Public Relations & Publicity Secretary
The UK District was officially launched on 22 September 1990 at the London School of Economics, University of London, Houghton Street, London WC2. The launch was done simultaneously with the celebration of the Silver jubilee of ICAN under the distinguished chairmanship of late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola FCA, FNIM, FNSE, D.Lit, LL.D – the then mentor of ICAN UK & District Society.
The UK District Society received its official seal on 23rd March 1991, represented by the then ICAN President – Mr. Ayo Oni FCA. This event took place at a presidential ball held at Hastings School of Management, Clapham Common, London, SW4, with the President in attendance. The District has grown and now has over 550 members in the UK. It is overseen by an elected Executive Committee and conducts its operations through committees.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aims and objectives of the Society include the following:
(a) To uphold the tenets of the Institute in the District;
(b) To support the members and students within the District as defined under section 1.3 of the Bye-Law;
(c) To implement the policies of the Institute at the District level;
(d) To hold regular meetings of the Society and organise trainings, seminars, conferences webinars and workshops for members of the District, other members of the Institute and the society at large.
(e) To organise events such as Annual Dinner, Annual General Meeting (AGM), etc;
(f) To disseminate other information of interest to members and the society at large.
(g) To attract and drive membership to the Institute through various enlightenment and educational programmes
(h) To follow up on members’ welfare and disputes resolutions;
(i) To represent the Institute on all fronts
(j) To handle matters affecting the Institute within its locality and report back to the Institute;
(k) To establish and maintain libraries for the use of members and students.

Meetings are held every last Friday of the month, except in December due to the festive season.

Book EventThe governance structure of the ICAN UK District society comprises of the Executive Committee supported by various standing committees. The Executive Committee is responsible for co-ordinating and controlling the affairs of the Society, regulating its membership and catering for the interests of members.
